Rakesh was awarded the prestigious Govind Ballav Pant Puraskar for his books Naxalwad aur Police ki Bhumika in 2012 and Naxalvaad: Unkaha Sach in 2021 by the Bureau of Police Research & Development, Ministry of Home Affairs.

His novels Colours of Red (2021), Lockdown Love (2022) and Ek Ghoont Chandani (2017) have also been highly appreciated.
