Lucius Annaeus Seneca, commonly known as Seneca the Younger, was a Roman philosopher, statesman, dramatist, and one of the most prominent figures in Stoic philosophy. Born in Corduba (modern-day Córdoba, Spain) and educated in Rome, Seneca served as anadvisor to Emperor Nero, and quickly became an influential figure in the Roman Empire. Seneca is best known for his contributions to Stoicism, aphilosophy that emphasizes virtue, reason, and self-control as the path to a good life. His writings, which include essays, letters, and tragedies, explore themes such as the nature of happiness, the importance of virtue, and the value of time. Works like Letters to Lucilius and On the Shortness of Life are still widely read for their insights into human behavior and ethical living. Despite his philosophical teachings, Seneca's life was marked by political intrigue and controversy. As Nero's advisor, he was implicated in the darker aspects of Nero’s reign, leading to his forced suicide in 65 CE.
