He has twice been a short-term fellow at Aligarh Muslim University. He has written about a dozen books and is proficient in English and Hindi with a smattering of Urdu. He has contributed to various magazines and newspapers, including the Economic and Political Weekly and Frontier.

He lives in Noida with his wife, two sons, two daughters-in-law, a granddaughter, Anya, and a grandson, Ayan.
