Kipling learned the language and connected with the culture. He was a rare man, popular with both the locals and the whites. Educated in England, he returned to India in 1882. He is famous for an array of works that include ‘Just So Stories’, ‘The Jungle Book’ and ‘Kim’. In 1907, Rudyard Kipling received the 1907 Nobel Prize in Literature, the first English author to be given the honour. He died in 1936.
