In later years his penchant for gambling sent him deeply into debt. Most of his important works were written after 1864, including Notes from UndergroundCrime and PunishmentThe Idiot, and The Brothers Karamazov, all available from Penguin Classics.

Coralie Bickford-Smith (cover illustrator) is an award-winning designer at Penguin Books, where she has created several highly acclaimed series designs. She studied typography at Reading University and lives in London.
